Caswell / Babies die in The Union House
« Last post by Michael Caswell on December 08, 2019, 12:01:15 pm »
Henry Caswell and Ann Shingles were married 9 sep 1843 in Sutton Benger

On 3 Dec 1843 they christened a daughter Elizabeth Jane in Sutton Benger.

One would assume Ann was heavily pregnant when she married, giving birth only 3 months after marriage.

On 17 Apr 1846 they christened a son George in Grittleton

Both children died within 2 days of each other in the Union House (a workhouse) in Lacock. I looked through all my databases to find an Elizabeth Jane & George in that age group, and these babies conclusively belong to Henry and Ann.

See  http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Chippenham/

I can only imagine these children were taken from the parents, as they were unable to care for them. Henry was a laborer. This is one of the most distressing things I've found, doing genealogy.

CaSSwell / Richard Casswell and Ann Marchant Marriage Trowbridge 1757
« Last post by Michael Caswell on December 08, 2019, 06:42:42 am »
I have mistakenly added the wrong Ann Marchant to the marriage of Richard.  Ann, as the daughter of Thomas, would likely be very incorrect, as this would mean she was only about 15 when she married.

Fortunately, I downloaded the entire Merchant/Marchant IGI list for Wiltshire many years ago, and on checking through I found a far more likely candidate. Ann Marchant, daughter of Richard, born 1719 in Trowbridge.

The actual marriage certificate shows Ann written up as Marchent, but she signed it Marchant.

So, I am changing my file to read MARCHANT.

In case you were wondering why F S Casswell listed himself as an 'explosives expert' on his many voyages around the world, it was because he stocked them for the Midsomer Norton mines.

see http://www.mnrjournal.co.uk/article.cfm?id=104718&headline=Bring%20along%20your%20photos%20and%20memories%20this%20weekend&sectionIs=news&searchyear=2017

The shop on the left, with the dark shop front is Casswells, (many will know of the Midsomer Norton branch of Casswells, which recently closed. Casswells stocked the carbide needed for the local coal miners’ carbide lamps. It also stocked explosives for the mines to blast away rock to reach the coal, though the explosives were not kept actually in the store!
