Babies die in The Union House
« on: December 08, 2019, 12:01:15 pm »
Henry Caswell and Ann Shingles were married 9 sep 1843 in Sutton Benger

On 3 Dec 1843 they christened a daughter Elizabeth Jane in Sutton Benger.

One would assume Ann was heavily pregnant when she married, giving birth only 3 months after marriage.

On 17 Apr 1846 they christened a son George in Grittleton

Both children died within 2 days of each other in the Union House (a workhouse) in Lacock. I looked through all my databases to find an Elizabeth Jane & George in that age group, and these babies conclusively belong to Henry and Ann.

I can only imagine these children were taken from the parents, as they were unable to care for them. Henry was a laborer. This is one of the most distressing things I've found, doing genealogy.
